Podcasting has evolved into a dynamic medium that amplifies diverse voices, offering a platform for underrepresented communities to share their stories and perspectives.

As we head towards the end of 2025, it's evident that both podcast listenership and content creation are becoming increasingly inclusive, reflecting a broader spectrum of identities and experiences.

Stats on Listenership Diversity by Race

The podcasting audience is diversifying:

  • 15% of U.S. podcast listeners are Black, up from 11% in previous years, aligning more closely with the African American population's share in the U.S. (Statista). The share of Hispanic listeners has also doubled since 2019.

  • As of 2025, 58% of Black and 51% of Hispanic listeners engage with podcasts at least once monthly, marking a 10% and 8% year-over-year growth, respectively (SimpleCast).

These figures highlight the growing appeal of podcasts among racial minority groups, underscoring the importance of culturally relevant content.

A Look at Podcast Diversity by Race

The landscape of podcast creators is becoming more diverse:

  • 42% of podcasters are now non-white, surpassing the overall U.S. population's racial diversity, as reported by Edison Research (SiriusXM Media).

  • Additionally, 58% of multicultural listeners say podcasts now allow them to hear from diverse creators and storytellers, with 41% saying that the podcasts they consume reflect their identity.

This shift reflects an effort within the podcasting industry to diversify voices and perspectives, enriching the content available to listeners.

Podcasting also serves as a vital space for LGBTQIA+ communities:

  • 76% of LGBTQIA+  audiences listen to podcasts daily, with 89% listening to multiple different podcasts in a given day or week, tuning into a wealth of shows that resonate with queer culture (SiriusXM Media).

  • With queer listeners being 39% more likely than the general population to say that they need a sense of belonging to feel happy, podcasts can represent a space for community storytelling. 68% of queer listeners report listening to podcast episodes back-to-back.

  • 44% of LGBTQIA+  listeners look for podcasts hosted by people who seem like people that they would be friends with in real life.

  • LGBTQ+ individuals spend 48% more time listening to podcasts (40 minutes daily) compared to the general population (27 minutes daily) (Media Culture).

These statistics emphasize the role of podcasts in providing representation and fostering inclusivity for LGBTQIA+ individuals.

LGBTQIA+ representation among podcast creators is also on the rise:

  • The number of LGBTQ+ forward podcasts has seen a notable rise, with platforms like Feedspot listing the best 100 LGBTQ+ podcasts, covering a diverse range of topics from culture to politics.

  • A significant number of podcasts are hosted by LGBTQIA+ individuals, focusing on topics ranging from queer identity to social justice, thereby contributing to a more inclusive podcasting environment.

This increase in LGBTQIA+ hosts and queer focused shows ensures that the narratives and experiences of queer individuals are authentically represented in the podcasting world.
